What Do You Buy for Someone Who Has Everything?

I was in a shop last winter, kind of just standing there holding a small ceramic cup I didn't even really like.
Then I put it down.
Picked it up again.
Put it down again.
The person I was buying for… already had everything I could think of. Not exaggerating.

It felt weirdly pointless.

Somewhere in the middle of that, I noticed a woman outside carrying a cotton tote bag. Old one. Slight stain on the side. She looked like she used it every day without thinking about it.
I don't know why I remember that more than the gift I almost bought.

Anyway… gifts that actually get used

I used to think “good gift” means something new or impressive.
But now I’m not sure.

I still have this canvas tote bag I got ages ago. It’s nothing special. The stitching is a bit uneven actually. But I use it more than anything else I own in that category.

Groceries. Books. Random stuff I don’t feel like holding in my hands.
It just stays there by the door now.

Handmade details… I don’t know, they feel different

This part is hard to explain properly.

A patchwork tote bag doesn’t really change its function. It’s still just a bag.
But when I see hand embroidery on fabric, or a hand-painted design, or even a slightly imperfect hand-lettered word on cotton… I tend to remember it longer.

Mass-produced things don’t really do that to me.
Maybe they do for others.
Not sure.

Sustainable gifts keep showing up everywhere now

I keep seeing people mention sustainable gifts, eco-friendly tote bags, reusable cotton bags… all that.

Even friends who never cared before suddenly talk about “buying less stuff”.

So yeah, a cotton canvas tote bag ends up making more sense than I expected.
Not exciting.
Just… useful in a way that doesn’t disappear after a week.

Final Thought

I don’t really remember most gifts I’ve given.
But I remember the ones that stayed in someone’s daily routine.
That’s probably the only real difference.
